Communing with nature in Latvia
Daina Gross LATVIANS ONLINE 12 Jul 2007
If you are planning a trip to Latvia—or are already in Latvia—do you have an interest to be at one with nature? Where can you turn to find out the best picnic and fishing spots, childrens’ nature activity parks and other outdoor recreation areas? Mammadaba.lv, a literal translation of the term Mother Nature, is an initiative created by Latvijas valsts meži (Latvian State Forests, www.lvm.lv) that encourages travel to the countryside.
By countryside this state institution means the forests, the rivers, the lakes—not just the towns. The hope here is that locals as well as tourists will find these trips to the countryside enjoyable and will return and pass this information on to others. The Web site is great for ideas for the best spots for all kinds of activities, from the local Latvian favorites of berry picking, mushrooming, fishing, bird-watching and hunting to cycling routes, orienteering and nordic walking routes. So far there are around 300 areas of state-owned forest territory under the stewardship of Latvijas valsts meži that have been cleared for recreational public use.
If you’ve headed out to the woods but want to stay longer than just one day your best bet for accommodation options is Atputa laukos. The Web site is created by the country tourism association Lauku ce#316;otâjs, which also publishes brochures that can be purchased in most bookstores. For more sites on the environment and various options for outdoor recreation have a look at the links page.
Latvijas valsts meži has also for the past two years been involved in a campaign to increase public awareness of the dumping of rubbish in Latvian forests. Cûkmens is the public face of this campaign, a litterer-turned-pig in a superman-style pink pig costume actively urging the public to clean up its act: “Nemêslo mežâ! Par cuku pârvêrtîsies!” (Don’t dump your rubbish in the forest! You’ll turn into a pig!). This year the campaign has focused on coastal rubbish dumping. Cûkmens has visited local school in coastal regions, educating the children as well as getting the public involved in cleaning up the coastline. Jâni was another perfect target for a Cûkmens intervention; with so many people heading to the woods to celebrate, there has always been a tendency to leave the post-Jâni waste behind. Learn more about the Cûkmens campaign and see video and listen to audio from the campaign at www.cukmens.lv.
School-aged children can learn more about the forests of Latvia by taking part in a program, Izzini mezu, a joint initiative of Latvian State Forests, the Foundation for Environmental Education and the Forest Development Fund. The patron of this program is Latvian writer and poet Imants Ziedonis. The aim is to teach kids the importance of the forest habitat from an ecological and cultural perspective in the early years to more complex concepts in the later years of their school life.

The "Other" Capitals
By Mike Collier CITY PAPER
LATVIA: Cesis
With a population of just 19,000 (barely enough to squeeze it into tenth place in the list of largest Latvian towns) Cesis may seem an unlikely capital for Latvia, but it proves that size isn't everything. The second city, Daugavpils, is an interesting place but along with many of the towns of Eastern Latvia, the Russian influence remains too strong to make it a credible choice. Even if you scratch away the Russification, you find Latgalian underneath with its own distinctive dialect, culture and independent spirit. Making a Latgalian city the capital of Latvia would be like making Edinburgh the capital of England.
While Riga has been the de facto capital ever since German crusaders established their first Livonian settlement there in 1201, Cesis (or Wenden as it was then known) was for centuries the real seat of their power. Their huge castle still dominates an Old Town that has remained much more intact than most Latvian settlements despite the numerous nation-defining battles which have taken place in the countryside around Cesis. Germans, Poles, Swedes and Russians have all controlled Cesis at one time or another, but it remains the most Latvian of all Latvian towns with fewer than one in ten residents speaking Russian as their first language, compared to Riga's 43 percent.

Latvian production wins top tourism film prize
Andris Straumanis LATVIANS ONLINE 10 Oct 2007
The Latvian Institute’s promotional video “Sounds Like Latvia” has won the grand prize at the 40th Annual Tourfilm Festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The video, produced by Riga-based Style Master Studios, was judged the best country promotional film of 2007.
The film was chosen from a record number of 775 entries representing 138 countries, Tourfilm organizers said in a press release. Slovenia won the prize last year.
The jury singled out the Latvian Institute video for its originality, creative direction, humor and storyline, Ojârs Kalninš, director of the Latvian Institute, told Latvians Online. Especially noted were the “talking Jugenheads” (animated version of the heads often seen in the Art Nouveau architecture in Riga), which have become a popular symbol for the city of Riga. Kalninš attended the event Oct. 3-4 and accepted the award on behalf of the institute.
The Latvian victory was one of several surprises in the competition, given that its entries had not fared well in the past, Tourfilm said.
Kalninš, who served as executive producer of the film, praised director Ivo Kalpenieks, art director Eriks Bozis and music composer Girts Biss for offering an original idea that managed to stand out in a crowded and highly competitive field.
“Ironically, the LI’s video was not created to just promote tourism,” Kalninš said. “We decided to expand on Latvia’s existing tourism slogan ("The Land that Sings") and explored the country through its many distinctive sounds.”
Kalninš said use of “talking Jugenheads” in the film was not necessarily an original concept, but simply a natural creative evolution of an idea that had been developing in Riga in recent years. Advertising executive Êriks Stendzenieks had toyed with the idea before his Zoom agency adopted the “Talking Stones” installation for the “Surprising Latvia” project in France. Pop group Prâta Vêtra considered using singing “Jugenheads” for a music video.
“To me, the fact that so many people were thinking in the same direction indicated that this idea had a life of its own, and we simply needed to develop it further,” Kalninš said.
The Latvian Insitute has recommended to the Riga City Council that it adopt the “talking Jugenheads” has part of its marketing plan.
The 6-minute, 30-second film may viewed or downloaded through the Latvian Institute’s Web site, www.li.lv.

Andris Straumanis LATVIANS ONLINE April 07, 2008
Latvian airline airBaltic will begin regularly scheduled flights to the western port city of Ventspils on April 11, the Riga-based national carrier announced April 7.
The Riga-Ventspils route is the second domestic route for airBaltic. The company last summer began flights to Liepâja, also a western port city.
“We are very pleased to open a second domestic route in Latvia,” airBaltic President and CEO Bertolt Flick said in a press release. “The Riga-Liepâja route has developed successfully, and passenger numbers have increased substantially. This illustrates the potential for growth in domestic routes, and we are sure that the Riga-Ventspils route will also be successful.”
The 45-minute flight will be on Fokker 50 airplanes. Tickets will cost LVL 4.10 from Ventspils to Riga, but LVL 12.70 from Riga to Ventspils.
The airline also flies internationally, with dozens of routes to Europe and the Middle East. In February, according to company statistics, airBaltic flew 3,125 flights carrying 143,572 passengers.

Latvia’s Swiss inspired gem
By Kate McIntosh* THE BALTIC TIMES March 25, 2009
RIGA - Sigulda is affectionately known as the Switzerland of Latvia.
And while you won’t find the same heart stopping peaks or quaint chalets of its borrowed namesake, Sigulda has a charm all of its own.
If it’s an adrenalin rush you’re chasing, then there’s plenty on offer.
Home to Latvia’s largest ski resort, Sigulda offers year-round outdoor adventure activities including skiing, hiking trails, balloon rides, bungee jumping and a famed bobsled track.
Dominated by castle ruins and unspoiled nature, this historically rich town boasts an abundance of recreational activities and natural wonders.
Some 1.5 million tourists visit Sigulda each year.
But the origins of tourism date back much further to the 18th and 19th centuries when local pioneer Nikolay Kropotkin began attracting upper class aristocrats from Russia. Convenient links to Riga also drew increasing numbers of tourists.
People came then just as they do today – to explore the nature trails, inspect castle ruins and caves and enjoy the adrenalin rush of a ride on the bobsled track.
Kropotkin, who developed Sigulda into a recreational area that was popular throughout the Russian Empire, is widely credited as the forefather of modern day tourism. The original guesthouse he established still stands today.
Located at the center of the Gauja National Park, Sigulda’s picturesque surroundings include dense forests, ancient castle ruins, mysterious caves and glacial lakes – perfect for hiking or passing the time.
Its lifeblood is the beautiful Gauja River, which at 452 kilometers in length and 100 meters in width is the second largest river in Latvia.
Its banks can be crossed via a unique air tram, stretching more than 1,000 meters. The panoramic views from both sides will take the breath away.
Perhaps due to its popularity and tourism potential, Sigulda has an exhaustive array of accommodation and dining options.
One of the most ambient dining options has to be the grandly cozy Pilsmuiza Restaurant. Located inside New Sigulda Castle, the restaurant offers dining options on its terrace in summer or inside overlooking crumbling castle ruins.
The region of Sigulda has a tumultuous history dating back to the 11th century. It has been the site of various religious and territorial struggles.
Remnants of Sigulda’s glorious past can be found everywhere, and visits to Medieval Sigulda Castle, or the new Sigulda Castle (Kropotkin Palace), should be high on visitors’ wish-lists.
However, the jewel in its crown is undoubtedly the impressive Turaida Medieval Castle, which has sweeping views over the valley.
This resplendent 14th century red brick castle sits sentry on the hills overlooking the region.
If it’s a relaxing escape from the city’s hustle bustle or an adrenalin rush you’re seeking, then Sigulda can accommodate at any time of the year.

Engures ezera dabas parks Lake Engure Nature Park
Main threats to the biological diversity and the breeding bird populations in the Lake Engure Nature Park (LENP) are overgrowing of the lake by reed, overgrowing of meadows both at the lake and sea. Lack of public involvement and awareness is obstacle to successful implementation of regulations and the management plan.
Overgrowing of the lake by reed, merging of separate reed-beds is considered very significant threat to the lake Engure. Main causes of the overgrowing are lowering of lake levels in 1842, intensive pollution with nutrients from agricultural runoff in the 1960s - 1980s, accumulation of organic material in lake sediments and termination of reed harvest.
Loss of meadow habitats and overgrowing of calcareous fens is another dangerous trend, leading to disappearance of such bird species as Crex crex and all Limicolae species, as well as numerous plant species, such as Liparis loeselii (L.) Rich and others.Several habitats of Community importance are in danger of disappearing due to this threat, such as Boreal Baltic coastal meadows, Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils, Northern boreal alluvial meadows and Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus and species of the Caricion davalliana.
Uncontrolled, illegal and increasing rate of forest cutting is nationwide threat and the result of such actions is that the mid-aged, old and over-age stands have very few elements favouring biological diversity: (large trees, standing dead trees, broken stems, wind-throws of old age, trees with hollows (>25 cm diameter). Therefore, there are no forests that have developed in the longer term without anthropogenic impact. As a result of sanitary cutting, in most of the territory, stands have low stem density, stumps of variable age, stumps from wind-broken trees, and vehicles have trampled the vegetation.
A negative trend that has been increasing in importance since renewal of independence is uncontrolled harvest by private forest owners. Continuation of this process, together with further drainage of forests would intensify the threat to biological diversity in the Lake Engure Nature park forests, and such important habitats as Transition mires and quaking bogs, Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicon albae, Fennoscandian deciduous swamp woods and Bog woodland.
